SPC Alumni Reunion Dinner

The Greater Toronto Area has the highest Chinese population in North America, including many St. Paul's graduates and former students. Alumni from different classes have met in small groups in the past, and during 1991 and 1992, members of the Class (Form 5) of 1961 began to hold monthly dinner meetings and were later joined by the Class of 1963. Efforts were made to network with other alumni and at one time nearly twenty turned up. Not surprisingly, the idea of forming an alumni association was mentioned more than once.

In July 1996, several alumni decided to revive the issue and hold a dinner meeting discuss forming an alumni association. The date of meeting was September 20, 1996 and the place was the Century Palace Restaurant in Markham, just outside Toronto. A news release was sent to local Chinese newspapers, magazines, radio stations, and television. The 1991 Edition of the Alumni Directory published by the HKAA was also a source of names and addresses of alumni residing in the Greater Toronto Area. More than seventy alumni were contacted.

The St. Paul's alumni reunion gathering turned out to be a great success, with 48 alumni participating and some came with their spouse. Names of participants are as follows:

The three most senior alumni are from the Class of 33, they are Dennie SIU Tin Lim, TAM Kwan Kon and CHAN Po Sum. The two youngest alumni are CHAN Po Lun and Peter IP Wai Lun, both from the class of Form 5 in 1995. The largest group was the Class of 69, with twelve old boys having registered for the dinner (one of them - Edward HUNG Ping Ching could not come).

A good time was had by all! Some publications of St. Paul's were displayed - "News from St. Paul's", "St. Paul's College Alumni Association Alumni Directory 1991 Edition", "St. Paul's College 120 Anniversary 1851-1971", and several old issues of "Wayfarer" from two participants. Members of each class took turn to come to the microphone to introduce themselves and say a few words; some giving hilarious accounts of old times and happy days and nicknames of buddies and former teachers were mentioned. Though no special program was planned, the evening was considered by most to be entertaining and enjoyable!

Election of the Provisional Committee of the Ontario Alumni Association of St. Paul's College (Hong Kong)

A formal meeting was convened during this occasion and the proposal of forming an alumni association was supported by all participants. A Provisional Committee was elected to pursue this goal. Sidney POON was elected as President and Jimmy SUN as Vice-President, both of whom are lawyers. William LEE was elected as Treasurer and Anthony WONG as Secretary. Other officers included William YAU as Membership Chair, Trevor SU as Information Chair, Willy LUK as Public Relations Chair, and CHAN Po Lun and Peter IP as Activities Co-Chairs. In subsequent months, Jimmy SUN, CHAN Po Lun and Peter IP resigned from the offices, Peter TSANG Kai Kin, CHING Yuk Sing and Simon LEE See Pang were co-opted as Directors. Peter TSANG replaced Jimmy SUN as the Vice-President and Simon LEE was appointed Activities Chair.

SPC 145th Anniversary Celebration & Spring Social Dinner

The first task of the Provisional Committee was to organize a dinner party to celebrate the 145th Anniverary of the founding of St. Paul's College in 1851. In November and December 1996, our alma mater and the Alumni Association in Hong Kong had organized a series of celebration programs in Hong Kong. The Provisional Committee also celebrated this happy occasion in Toronto by holding a special banquet on March 1, 1997 in the Century Palace Restaurant, Markham. There was a big turnout of 74 alumni, while the total number of participants, including family members, was 103 persons.

Inauguration Ceremony & First General Meeting of OAASPC(HK)

Another important task undertaken by the Provisional Committee was the application for incorporation of the Alumni Association under the Corporation Act of Ontario. Sidney POON led the Incorporation Task Group, with Peter TSANG, Anthony WONG and William YAU as members. The Constitution and By-laws were drafted and volunteer legal service was provided by Sidney POON's law firm. Finally, on August 5, 1997, the Letters Patent was issued by the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations, indicating the Ontario Alumni Association of St. Paul's College (Hong Kong) was legally incorporated.

The Inauguration Ceremony and the First General Meeting of the Ontario Alumni Association was held on February 7, 1998 in the Century Palace Chinese Restaurant, Markham, attended by 59 alumni. Sidney POON and Peter TSANG were elected as President and Vice-President respectively.

This is the first chapter of the history of the Ontario Alumni Association of St. Paul's College!
